Rain Technology Anamorphic-XR Suggested Optical Design (Business Wire Graphic: )
Boulders, Colorado and San Jose, California — (Business Wire)- Creator of the most sophisticated directional display technologies worldwide, Rain Technology today revealed intentions to show Anamorphic-XRTM, its patented optical engine for augmented reality and virtual reality headsets, new advancements.
Leading the optical design projects and new concept development at Rain Technology, head scientist Dr. Michael Robinson guides the company Having over 170 U.S. patents, he is the author of more than 50 research articles and the book “Polarisation Engineering for LCD Projection”. At SID Display Week in San Jose, Dr. Robinson will be presenting the AR/VR breakthroughs in the first technical paper on this subject, “Anamorphic-XR: Imaging Waveguide Technology for Efficient and Wide Field-of- View Near-Eye Display.” May 14, 2024, at 11:10 a.m., his session will take place in Room 220B.
Offering high definition, wide-angle images that enable a brighter, clearer vision in a small and transparent form factor, Anamorphic-XR is the company’s most recent use of its performance-leading IP in waveguides and optics. It not only opens fresh hybrid immersive possibilities but also changes the capacity of conventional AR and VR. Downloadable at www.raintechnology.com/ar-vr-anamorphic-xr-form is a general infosheet contrasting Anamnic-XR with standard VR and AR optics.
Dr. Robinson will introduce new optical and display technologies at SID Display Week that seek to overcome typical AR/VR problems like size, eye relief, and most significantly, field-of- view, resolution and brightness. To further image realism and increase comfort, a hybrid immersive display—which combines an anamorphic waveguide with a traditional VR display—is also suggested to minimise headaches sometimes connected with wearing virtual reality headsets.
“Our R&D has shown that contrary to popular wisdom, you can realise field-of- view and efficiency improvements over conventional approaches to AR/VR optics and you can do so in a highly compact and manufacturable form by using a mirror for the lateral optical path and lenses for the transverse path,” said Robert Ramsey, CEO and founder of Rain Technology. “With suitable adaptation, this advance can address many of the key optical challenges faced by AR/VR today, namely wide-field image fidelity, brightness, dynamic range, and eye fatigue.”
How It Proceeds
An anamorphic microdisplay incorporated within the frame of the anamorphic waveguide powers Anamorphic-XR displays. Emitted from the microdisplay pixels, light moves down the transparent anamorphic waveguide where a cylindrical mirror reflects the light back upward to be picked by the user’s eyes. This lets metaverse images show floating in space in the user’s range of vision while real-world images pass via the waveguide.
More precisely, the Anamorphic-XR technique independently magnifies pictures in orthogonal planes using discrete lateral and transverse anamorphic elements to maximise resolution and field-of- view. It also employs polarisation rather than diffraction to extract light from the waveguide, therefore producing a clearer, brighter image. Leveraging the proven track record of Rain Technology’s patented micro LED technologies, the unique microdisplay with anamorphic pixels offers a possible substitute for traditional AR and VR displays with enhanced efficiency, brightness, and manufacturability that readily fit with contemporary designs.
After the SID Display Week presentation, the technical paper “Anamorphic-XR: Imaging Waveguide Technology for Efficient and Wide Field-of- View Near-Eye Display” will be available for download.
